Keep It Simple!

Posted on October 5, 2011 at 7:49 PM
I remember how I used to rack my brain trying to think of things to do with Papa Joe. He had Parkinson's Disease and eventually was unable to drive his car which he loved to do.

I tried to come up with activities that would make Papa Joe smile. Something that would be a good diversion in his day and give Grandma Helen a break from the daily rigors of caregiving. The more I thought about it, the more complex the activity would become.

The fact of the matter was, it was the simplest things that brought him great joy. A stand out time was a typical trip to SAM's Club. One day, Papa Joe decided not to use his wheelchair to go through the store and opted for a motorized cart. The minute he turned on the cart and steered his way into SAM's Club he grinned from ear-to-ear.

We both belly laughed as he maneuvered his shiny vehicle around the racks and aisles, occasionally bumping into a pole...or two. He was like a kid in a candy store. He was "the man", he was in control.

I don't know what made Papa Joe use the cart that day. We always encouraged him to give it a try. That day he decided to say yes and we were all so glad he did!

The moral of the story, don't ever give up asking. You're just one no away from a YES!
